Downtown is a mixed-use City of Santa Cruz neighborhood, comprising the city's main commercial and civic area, plus the surrounding residential area. Chapters two, three, and five in The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture include "Downtown" in their titles, and the label is applied here to cover all of those areas. Geographically, all of downtown is on the alluvial San Lorenzo river floodplain, protected from floods since 1959 by the levees that form the Riverwalk.
