The St. Charles Hotel opened in 1873 at the corner of Mission Street and River Street (now N. Pacific). The hotel was created by adding a third story under a Second Empire-style mansard roof to an 1867 building owned by William Anthony, with the financial assistance of Charles Brown. Joseph Bloch became the hotel manager in 1877. Later called the Waverly Hotel, the building burned down in 1919. Most of the hotel site has been consumed by street widenings, and the remainder is occupied today by SCOPE Park.
