Downtown is a mixed-use City of Santa Cruz neighborhood, comprising the city's main commercial and civic area, plus the surrounding residential area. The label here applies to chapters two, three, five, and part of six (west of the river) in The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture. Geographically, all of downtown Santa Cruz is on the alluvial San Lorenzo River floodplain, protected from floods since 1959 by the levees that form the Riverwalk.
