"Frederick Augustus Hihn" (1829-1913) was the most influential Santa Cruz entrepreneur of his generation, and a leader of the local German immigrant community. Brother Hugo followed Frederick to Santa Cruz in 1860. Hihn children who survived to adulthood and stayed in the area: Katherine (1856-1921), Louis (1858-1901), August Charles (1864-1918), Frederick Otto (1866-1916), Theresa (1872-1907), and Agnes (1874-1956).
