Lynch, Sedgwick J.

Sedgwick Lynch (1822-1881) was a very active builder/contractor in Santa Cruz County from the 1850s through the 1870s. With partner George Gragg, he built the 1866 County Courthouse, several buildings along Pacific Avenue and probably both the Davis & Cowell and railroad wharfs. He did a lot of business with both Davis & Cowell and Frederick Hihn. The 1877 house Lynch built for himself at 174 West Cliff Drive was designed by John Morrow, and survives today as a B&B. After the 1910 death of widow Jane Lynch (1842-1910), the house was leased by Mary Jane Hanly for her "sanitorium", prior to construction of the Hanly Hospital next door. Elliott has an 1879 drawing of the recently-built house - which looks nearly the same today, though everything around it in the drawing has changed.
