Mary Jane Hanly, a native of the UK, was a nurse who opened a "sanitorium" on First Street (Beach Hill) in 1905, often used as a surgery by local doctors. Hanly also opened an office in the Hihn building at Pacific and Lincoln (demolished after earthquake damage in 1989). In 1909, the sanitorium moved to the former Lynch residence on West Cliff drive. Then, in cooperation with Dr. Percy Phillips, the Hanly Hospital was built, located adjacent to the Lynch house at the corner of Bay Street and West Cliff Drive.

The Monterey Archdiocese bought the hospital after Hanly's death in 1941, arranging for a group of nuns from the Adrian Dominican Sisters to come from Michigan to run it as "Sisters Hospital". The hospital closed in 1967, after today's Dominican Hospital was built. The West Cliff Drive site became today's Dream Inn parking lot in the 1970s after demolition of the building. Concrete remnants of the hospital entry walkway curbing (see 2024 photo below) and building foundations can still be seen.
