The five main biography sources for persons living before WWI are:

Later sources (e.g. Riptide Centennial) tend to mainly refer back to one or more of these five. The number of such biographies provides a rough idea of a person's prominence during their lifetime. Persons became the subjects of these "personal notices" (Elliot's euphemism) mostly by paid subscription (sometimes by descendants), which financed publication of the books. We can categorize as:
