Published sources for multiple biographies of historical Santa Cruz County persons. The four main biography sources for persons active in their communities during the years 1879-1911 are Elliott (1879), Harrison (1892), Guinn (1903), and Martin (1911). Later sources tend to mainly refer back to these four for biographical information on those persons. The number of such biographies not only indicates the amount of information available on a person, but also provides a rough idea of that person's local prominence during the years 1879-1911. Persons became the subjects of these "personal notices" (Elliot's euphemism) mostly by paid subscription (sometimes by descendants), which financed publication of the books. Martin includes mostly first-time subscribers, so very few persons have biographies in all four books. We can categorize as:
