Published sources for multiple biographies of historical Santa Cruz County persons. The four main biography sources for persons active in their communities during the years 1879-1911 are Elliott (1879), Harrison (1892), Guinn (1903), and Martin (1911). Later sources tend to mainly refer back to these four for biographical information on those persons. The number of such biographies not only indicates the amount of information available on a person, but also provides a rough idea of that person's local prominence during the years 1879-1911. Persons became the subjects of these "personal notices" (Elliot's euphemism) mostly by paid subscription (sometimes by descendants), which financed publication of the books. Martin includes mostly first-time subscribers, so very few persons have biographies in all four books. We can categorize as:

The five main biographical sources for persons living in Santa Cruz County before WWI are:

One later compilation of biographies, Riptide Centennial, includes much information from one or more of these five, but also includes short (some very short) bios of a large number of "pioneers" (persons documented to have been in the Santa Cruz area prior to statehood) not profiled elsewhere.

With the exception of the Society of California Pioneers/HJ4, publication of these local history books was financed by selling subscriptions (sometimes to descendants, occasionally autobiographies) - a common and popular publication method in that era. The return to subscribers was inclusion of their "personal notice" (Elliot's euphemism for a short biography) in the book. Addition inclusion of a portrait presumably meant a larger subscription amount. Also, because much of the personal information was provided by the subscriber, historical accuracy is not guaranteed.

Two other such books, not considered a "main source" because they include fewer biographies of Santa Cruz County residents:

The number of biographies in these five sources provides a rough idea of a person's prominence during their lifetime, so additional categories include:
