Nelson Taylor (1811-1898, Harrison p.249), born in upstate New York, came to California in 1850, and to Santa Cruz County in 1851. He farmed in several locations in the Santa Cruz vicinity, and bought two parcels on Bay Street in before 1866: one of 10+ acres (shown in the map detail at right, from the 1866 Santa Cruz map), and another of 14+ acres, on the same side of Bay but up past Mission Street. In 1885 he bought a property and built a house on St. Lawrence Street (now Highland Ave.).

Nelson served as County Assessor from 1862-1872.
