Lambert Blair Clements (1823-1890), born in Philadelphia, came to the Santa Cruz area in 1847. In 1850 he married Maria Josefa Castro Lodge, who had inherited land in the Soquel area from her mother Martina. In 1851 Clements became one of the first two Santa Cruz County Justices of the Peace, elected along with John Mattison. When in 1852 the county created three judicial townships - Santa Cruz, Soquel, and Watsonville - Clements and Mattison were reelected as Justices of the Peace for Soquel.
