Fuller Prewitt Sinclair was , according to Riptide, born in Canada, and came west as a trapper in the same party as Isaac Graham and Job Dye. Arriving in our area in the mid-1840s, he joined Fremont's California Battalion in 1846. Sinclair "was responsible for construction of" (Riptide CE13) Santa Cruz' first hotel, Union House (later Santa Cruz House). He apparently did not own the hotel until 1853, when he bought it from Richard Fitz Scott and Edward Myers Abell (Riptide CPL12). Sinclair later moved to the Corralitos area.

How Riptide settled on this name spelling is not known. In later interviews, Dye remembered his name as "Pruett St. Clair". Elliott has "Truitt St. Clair" and mentions an association with Paul Sweet.
