Johann Ernest Kunitz (1827-1897) was a German immigrant who came to Santa Cruz in 1853. He established a soap and glue manufacturing business on Chestnut Street, adjacent to what became the F. A. Hihn estate. In ca.1872, he sold/exchanged the property with Hihn for a residential lot on Locust Street, moving his manufactory to River Street near the (Salz) tannery.
