Charles Eugene Canfield (1865-1943) was born in Monterey, where his father was the first resident physician at the US Army Presidio. The family moved to Santa Cruz during Charles' childhood, where he finished his public schooling. After various commercial endeavors, he settled on the insurance business, with a sideline in real estate development. Son Lawrence continued that interest, while becoming head of the Seaside Company (1952-1984).
