Holy Cross is the English translation of Santa Cruz, and became the name of the Roman Catholic parish which began as Mission Santa Cruz in 1857 (or before) when a new church was built to replace the crumbling adobe chapel. The present church was built in 1891. Also part of the parish is Holy Cross School.
