Holy Cross is the English translation of Santa Cruz, and became the name of the Roman Catholic parish which began as Mission Santa Cruz in 1857 (or before) when a new church was built to replace the crumbling adobe chapel. The present church was built in 1889, and the memorial triple-arch out front in 1891. Also part of the parish are a rectory, parish hall, the Mission replica and gift shop, and Holy Cross School. The separate Holy Cross High School, on High Street, closed in 1970 - the former school building is now used by the parish for other purposes.
