Jonathan Harwood Guild (1814-1870), a native of Connecticut, came to California during the Gold Rush and to Santa Cruz in the 1850s. In the 1860s, the family lived on upper Locust Street, but the 1866 map shows that Guild owned several other parcels in Santa Cruz by that time. The Sentinel ad shown at right lists Guild among several other partners inn a westside subdivision.

Guild (or his estate) donated Locust Street land for the first Baptist church (noted in Elliott, p.69). The church building was later moved down the hill to Walnut Avenue.
