John Elden was shown as a property owner ("store") on the 1866 Santa Cruz map, in "Block No. 4" (corner of Pacific Ave. and Water Street). Sidewalk Companion has the name "Charles D. Eldon". According to Riptide Centennial, Charles Eldon opened the store referred to in Sidewalk Companion in 1852, but went back east in 1854, leaving the store in the hands of his brother John. John also left the area, in 1858, and the Cooper brothers took over the store.
