Rudolph Ulrich (1840-1906]), born in Germany, became a prominent landscape designer in California. In Santa Cruz, he was hired in 1887 to design the layout of Mission Plaza that remains essentially unchanged today.

After the Phelan family acquired the Point Santa Cruz land in 1887, Ulrich laid out the grounds.
