John Nelson Besse (1830-1924), born in Maine, came to California in 1850, to Santa Cruz in the 1860s, and later to Watsonville. In 1884, he entered a real estate partnership with George W. Sill. In the late 1880s he moved to King City, in Monterey County, but is buried in Santa Cruz along with his wife Martha, a daughter of Eli Moore. Nephew Milton Besse has a bio in Guinn (p648) that includes info on John.
