The Mission Hill tunnel was completed in 1876 by the Santa Cruz & Felton (SC&F) Railroad, so that its tracks could bypass Pacific Avenue. The tunnel and railroad were acquired by the South Pacific Coast Railroad (SPC) in 1880. The SPC was bought out by Southern Pacific (SP) in the 1880s. SP broad-gauged the tracks, enlarged the tunnel, and built the Union Depot. The tunnel is used today by the Santa Cruz, Big Trees & Pacific Railroad.
