David L. [Lewis] Adams (1837-1895), born in Indiana, came to California in 1846. According to the 1879 biography in Elliot (p.27-28), Adams' family wagon was one of a party that crossed over the Sierra Nevada just ahead of the ill-fated Donner party, via what is now known as Donner Pass. After Adams' father made some gold-mining profits, Adams attended the University of the Pacific for 2 1/2 years before coming to Santa Cruz County in 1862. Settling "on the San Lorenzo River, ten miles from the city", he married Julia A. T. Bennett (who may have been a daughter of Vardamon Bennett) and was, in 1879, working in the lumber business. The family left this area shortly after the Elliott biography, later settling permanently in the Los Angeles area.
