Charles Winterhalder (1822-1865) was a German-born jeweler and watchmaker who came to Santa Cruz with his brothers Theodore and Joseph from Baden Baden in the 1850s. By 1859, he had established a business. In 1866, his widow "Mrs. Winterhalder" was listed as a downtown property owner.
