William Wirt Stice (1866-1959), born in California, was the eldest of three brothers profiled collectively in Harrison (p.356) as "The Stice Brothers". The trio came to Santa Cruz in the late 1880s, buying the Avenue Stables on Pacific Avenue (across from the end of Elm Street). In 1891, they bought the Excelsior Stables (at the corner of Mission Street and Vine Street) from J. B. Peakes.
