Martin Rizzo-Martinez earned a Phd in history from UCSC, and in 2022 works locally for California State Parks. In 2022, he published ''We Are Not Animals'', an examination of Santa Cruz-area natives from the establishment of the Spanish mission through the end of the 19th century.
