We Are Not Animals (2022 book)

We Are Not Animals was published in 2022 by Martin Rizzo-Martinez. The book adds a lot of new information about native peoples in the Santa Cruz area. The Ohlone tribal group that lived around what is now the City of Santa Cruz are referred to as Uypi, and their language group is Awaswas. Rizzo-Martinez researched the native name that evolved into Soquel, and is convinced that a person known as "Soquel" was chief of the Uypi at the time of the establishment of Mission Santa Cruz. This contradicts some of the conjecture in Clark and other earlier sources.
