George P. Lake (1839-1920), a native of Germany, had a blacksmith shop as late as 1876 at Front and Cooper streets, dba Foster & Lake with partner Edward Foster. By 1900, the shop (as seen in the photo detail at right) had changed name and ownership (Ely).

Mrs. Luna A. Gibbs . . . born in Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1846 . . . taught school until her [first] marriage to William G. Lake. The couple came to California in the early 70's, settling in Santa Cruz where Mr. Lake's brother, George D. Lake, operated a blacksmith shop with Edward Foster at the corner of Front and Cooper streets.
