Gervis Hammond came to Zayante (Rancho Zayante) in 1849, was in the timber-cutting business, moving to Soquel in 1851, and died in 1854. He was appointed in 1850 to be the first county treasurer/auditor/assessor (offices combined at that time), according to Rowland (p70).
