Edward Foster (1839-1920), a native of Germany, bought half-interest in a Front Street blacksmith shop in 1865, and the other half in 1870. He later entered the Foster & Lake partnership with George Lake. By 1900, the shop (as seen in the photo detail at right) had changed name and ownership (Ely).
