Charles Roussillon (Bancroft used the double s, but Rowland used only one") was listed by H. H. Bancroft among 1843 arrivals in California (Rowland borrowed this list). It's unclear when he came to the Santa Cruz area, but it was almost certainly before statehood. Roussillon was among a small group of French and/or French-Canadian men who came to the Monterey Bay area in the 1840s. Some (e.g. Roussillon), were naturalized as Mexican citizens. Some also married local girls and received late-Mexican-era land grants.
