Dominican Hospital, located just east of Santa Cruz on Soquel Drive in the Live Oak area, is the largest hospital in Santa Cruz County. It is owned by Common Spirit Health, which is "the country's largest Catholic hospital chain and its second-largest nonprofit hospital chain (as of 2019)" (Wikipedia). Its history:
- 1941. The Adrian Dominican Sisters bought the small Hanly Hospital on West Cliff Drive, built in 1925.
- 1949. The Sisters bought Santa Cruz Hospital (now Branciforte Plaza).
- 1967. Dominican Hospital opened in its current location, and closed the other two facilities.
- 1975. The West Cliff Drive property was sold. Dream Inn, the hotel across the street, was sold in the same year.The hospital building was demolished in 1980.
- 1990. Dominican bought Santa Cruz Community Hospital.
