Hammond, Gervis

Gervis Hammond came to Zayante (Rancho Zayante) in 1849, was in the timber-cutting business, moving to Soquel in 1851, and died in 1854. He was appointed in 1850 to be the first county treasurer/auditor/assessor (offices combined at that time), according to Rowland (p70). According to the short bio in Riptide Centennial, Hammond leased a Zayante sawmill from Isaac Graham in 1850, and later brought several legal actions against Graham, so Hammond's name might appear in the hard-to-find Doyce Nunis book The Trials of Isaac Graham.
