According to The Sidewalk Companion to Santa Cruz Architecture (2005 book), Silas Bennett lived in a little cottage erected (ca. 1850) on a site adjacent to what became the Pope House in 1862. The book cites a Bennett helped build the famous mill in which gold was discovered on the American River.
