Julius Pelton acquired the land that includes Point Santa Cruz in the 1870s, from Almus Rountree. In 1887, the land passed to James Phelan. Pelton is remembered by today's Pelton Avenue, which runs along the inland edge of Lighthouse Field State Beach.
