Alfred J. Hinds (1845-1921), born in England, came to Santa Cruz as a child with his father in the early 1850s. By the 1870s, he was a real estate dealer/investor in partnership with Christian Hoffman as "Hoffman & Hinds". The partners later expanded into insurance and piano sales. Hinds had a large house built on Chestnut Street in 1888. The house survives today as the Hinds House B&B (Stanley Stevens found that the house builder's name, noted as "W. J.
