Henry Albert van Coenen Torchiana (1867-1940) was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1895, and came to Santa Cruz in 1894. He was serving as Consul General of The Netherlands to the U.S. in 1908 when he and his wife Catherine purchased a hillside estate above High Street. In 1933 he wrote what is still the most complete history we have of Mission Santa Cruz.
