Alfred J. Hinds (1845-1921), born in England, came to Santa Cruz as a child with his father in the early 1850s. By the 1870s, he was a real estate dealer/investor in partnership with Christian Hoffman as "Hoffman & Hinds". Hinds had a large house built on Chestnut Street in 1888. The house survives today as the Hinds House B&B (Stanley Stevens found that the house builder's name, noted as "W. J. Hinds", was "William Johnson Hinds", but I haven't found the source of that info). The biography (right) of Alfred's father Thomas is from the 1950 Riptide Centennial. Alfred's sister married Duncan McPherson.
