Joseph Smith Young (1835-1913), born in New Hampshire, came to San Francisco by sea in 1857. He was a dairy farmer in Marin County, Pescadero (during the 1860s), and the Salinas Valley before moving to Santa Cruz 1869-72. He returned permanently after four years in his native state. Elliott has a drawing of his home (p.f22), which appears to be somewhere along the coast road (today's Mission Street), its style suggesting that it was probably built during the 1869-72 period.
