The St. George Hotel was the last iteration of a building project begun in 1889 by San Francisco developer Anton Hotaling. Hotaling's first building burned in the 1894 downtown fire. Rebuilt and expanded, the hotel eventually covered most of the block. After the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake doomed the hotel (which had been converted to apartments) to demolition, developer Barry Swenson's company rebuilt it, preserving the small single-room-occupancy apartments.
