Cornelius Bullen "C. B." Pease (1822-1909) built a 3-story brick commercial building on Pacific Avenue in 1891, replacing one or more previous wood structures. The brick building's interior was gutted in the 1894 fire, and the third story was removed, but the walls remained. They were added to the expanding St. George hotel as its northernmost section. Previously, the Sentinel had noted that Pease paid the most in city taxes of any resident in 1890. In another article, Pease recalled being on a ship that ran aground off Sausalito in 1853, so he had apparently been a California resident for many years. The family home was on Grant Street.
