Kittredge, Francis M.

Francis Martin Kittredge (1810-1879), a native of Massachusetts, came to California in 1849, and to Santa Cruz in the 1850s. Already married, his wife Almira Mead Kittredge (1817-1885) either came with him or joined him soon after. Although he was trained as a doctor, Kittredge never practiced medicine here. According to Chase, in 1853 Kittredge was employed as wharf manager for Davis & Jordan. in that year, Kittredge was elected to the state Assembly, serving a single one-year term. In 1869, John Morrow designed and built a house for the couple on Beach Hill. That house evolved into today's Sunshine Villa.
