Charles Winterhalder (1822-1865) was a German-born jeweler and watchmaker who came to Santa Cruz with his brothers Theodore and Joseph from Baden Baden in the 1850s. By 1859, he had established a business. In 1866, his widow "Mrs. Winterhalder" was listed as a downtown property owner, as was the business partnership "Porter & Winterhalder" (a 3.8 acre parcel between Willow Lane and the river, and a smaller lot noted as "market" between Front Street and the Willow Lane side of the larger parcel).

After Winterhalder's 1865 death, his widow Josephine (1838-1872) remarried, to Samuel Sharp, but died in 1872 (in childbirth?). Sharp is profiled briefly in Riptide (CE12).
