John Alfred "Jack" Swan (1817-1896), born in England, came to California by sea in 1843, settling in Monterey. It's unclear whether he ever lived in Santa Cruz, but visited often and knew many pioneers of our area, including Thomas Martin, Benjamin Kooser, Ed Williams, William Hardy. In 1882, the remarkable letter copied here was published in the Weekly Sentinel.
