Hans Christian Struve (1835-1908) was born in the Schleswig-Holstein region, a part of modern Germany but in 1835 claimed by both Denmark and the German Confederation. Struve settled on 300 acres in the Watsonville area in 1858 (Elliott, p.90, f90 (ranch drawing)). A branch of the Watsonville Slough wetlands is named for his family.
