Santa Cruz County was created in 1850 (initially/briefly named "Branciforte County"), following California statehood. A northern section was split off in 1856 to become part of San Mateo County.

The county is governed by a Board of Supervisors.

The first county elections were held in 1852. Registered voter rolls were published prior to elections.
