In that year, the [[History Pages: 29 - How the trains came to Santa Cruz (part 2)|Santa Cruz Railroad]] was completed, connecting Santa Cruz to the Southern Pacific line at Pajaro. Rabasa was not a grower himself, but a wholesaler who saw a new opportunity to export apples and other tree fruit from Santa Cruz County via the railroad.
