Bernard Peyton (1826-1906), born in Virginia, was the second and longest-tenured superintendent of the California Powder Works. In 1875 he built a mansion well up the steep eastern bank of the San Lorenzo River, providing and expansive view overlooking the Works. He and his family lived there until 1900. Bernard's third son William Charles Peyton became Assistant Superintendent in 1887 after graduating from UC Berkeley, and built his own mansion next to his father's.
