Pacific Garden Mall

Pacific Garden Mall was the name given to a section (from Cathcart Street to Water Street) of Pacific Avenue and the one block of Cooper Street in downtown Santa Cruz following a 1969-70 redesign. Large landscaping planters were added, and traffic was one-way. Chuck and Esther Abbott were driving forces behind its creation. The Chuck and Esther Abbott Slide Collection of color slides includes many views along Pacific Avenue before/during/after completion of the Garden Mall. Since the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the street has been redesigned again, removing or reducing in size the landscaping features, while retaining some of the one-way traffic features.
