James Harkins was an Irish immigrant who came to the Pajaro Valley area in the 1870s. According to Elliott, the Harkins ranch was near Pajaro in Monterey County (Elliott, p.93, f96 (ranch drawing)). Despite his residence in a neighboring county, a branch of the Watsonville Slough wetlands is named for him.
