David Jonas (1860-1927), born in Germany, came to Santa Cruz in 1879, where he established a clothing store in partnership "with three brothers" (brothers' first names not found, except for a first initial "A"). In 1908, David had the "Jonas Block" built on Pacific Avenue, which remains in 2023. In the 1890 "Great Register", and on the 1910 Census, the last name was accidentally/intentionally misspelled as "Jones".
